About Us

Eastern Desert Art is an Australian outback Aboriginal online art gallery representing the work of significant Aboriginal artists from the Utopia region (Angarapa) of central Australia, 250kms north east of Alice Springs.

Eastern Desert Art is now affiliated with Tingari Arts, Alice Springs to represent a broader cross-section of styles. Together, Tingari Arts and Eastern Desert Art represent individual artists from various communities across the Eastern, Western and Central Deserts.

Sonja Chalmers with artist Freddie Jones Eastern Desert Art is run by Sonja Chalmers on the neighbouring property – MacDonald Downs – 285kms north east of Alice Springs. The Chalmers relationship with the Aboriginal people extends back three generations. Many of the Aboriginal artists who these days live on Utopia were born and grew up on MacDonald Downs alongside our family.

Walala Tjapaltjarri, Thomas Tjapaltjarri, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, Molly Napaltjarri Jugadai and Josie Petrick Kemarre are the five significant artists from the Gibson Desert WA, Haast Bluff and Harts Range, NT featured this season.

We encourage you to visit us now that we have opened our gallery and home to the public:

Life on an Outback Cattle Station and the Utopia Aboriginal Artistic Community

Discover what it’s like living and working on a remote outback station in central Australia. Located in Central Australia, MacDonald Downs is a 2067 square kms(half a million acres) working cattle station, located 285 kilometers north east of Alice Springs. The Chalmers family has been running cattle in this area since the early 1920s and they are now opening their home and gallery for guests to experience life in central Australia on a remote cattle station and meet Utopian artists painting on the station grounds.
Meet Aboriginal painters while they work on their canvases in a relaxed outdoor environment. Learn about the history of the station and the interpretation of the land and its bush tucker by the traditional owners.
Enjoy delicious picnic lunches in the bush and share delightful dinners with the Chalmers family in their lovely homestead, dining on organic produce from the station.
Visit central Australia’s newest and exclusive park, The Mac & Rose Chalmers Conservation Reserve on MacDonald Downs. This unique granite boulder outcrop - encompassing 470 hectares of land, is host to a wide range of native plant species and wildlife.
